Cleburne ISD students preparing for 2018 Johnson County Junior Livestock Show and Youth Fair

Cutline--Cleburne High School senior Caitlin Rothell looks on as agriculture science teacher James Willson weighs her newly-purchased Californian, one of 28 that arrived at the campus in early December. Rothell has spent the past month growing and grooming her rabbit in preparation for the 2018 Johnson County Junior Livestock Show. She is one of six Cleburne FFA students who will have entries in Tuesday’s Rabbit Show.

A group of Cleburne High School students have spent the past few weeks getting acquainted with the rabbits they will be entering in next week’s Johnson County Junior Livestock Show and Youth Fair.

The six members of Cleburne FFA had the opportunity to personally select their four white-furred Californians, following their after-school delivery to the campus on December 8. The rabbits were six weeks old at the time. Now a month older, and larger, each student will have the opportunity to show three of their furry friends at Tuesday’s Rabbit Show.

The “bunny rabbits” were not a dime a dozen—at least in price--according to CHS agriculture science teacher Richard Leck. There was, however, no shipping fees involved, as they are local, coming from a producer in Godley.

“Each student had to pay about $60 apiece,” Leck said. “They aren’t cheap. They weigh about a pound when they are delivered to us, and should weigh five pounds by the time of the show.”

Freshman Jaylynn Speed is among the CHS students who purchased rabbits to exhibit at this year’s Junior Livestock Show.

“Rabbits are adorable,” Speed said. “I had already built a hutch by the time they were delivered. I’ve always wanted to show animals. I think I will try pigs next year.”

The 2018 Johnson County Junior Livestock Show and Youth Fair events begin at 2 p.m. Monday with the poultry and turkeys show. A schedule of events for the week is listed below. All activities will take place at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse facility on Highway 174.
